Ruwan Kariyawasam

I have been photographing Sri Lankan weddings since 2014 and filming them since 2017. Most of the work is on the coast and up in the hills — Galle, Bentota, Kandy — and about half of it comes from families who found me through someone I shot for two seasons ago. I work quietly. One camera on a shoulder, no light stands in the aisle, nothing asked of you that you would not have done anyway. The film and the stills come off the same day, from the same person, so they read as one story instead of two suppliers’ portfolios stitched together. Commercial work — hotels, villas, and the occasional product set — pays for the gear that makes the weddings look the way they do.
